The history of Merino in Australia dates back to 1797 when a flock of Spanish Merino arrived via South Africa. he flock was bought by two British officers who transported it to Sydney where the sheep were sold to landowners. Among them, John Macarthur became a legendary figure in the Australian Merino wool industry. The year of 1997 marked 200 years since the arrival of Merino sheep in Australia, an event that has led to one of the country's great trading successes. |
